Heat is the thing that ends lawn careers, not injury. Not dramatically — a guy quits in July, another one has a bad afternoon and never quite works the same way again, and the crew's output in August is two-thirds of what it was in May and nobody says why.

Most of the advice is "drink water and take breaks," which is true and useless. Here's the version with numbers.

Heat illness is a progression, and the early stages are easy to dismiss as being unfit or hungover.

The sign that matters most: he stops making sense. Confusion or odd behaviour in a hot crew member is not tiredness. It's the one symptom that separates "needs a break" from "needs an ambulance," and it's the one most likely to be laughed off on a job site.

Second most important: sweating stops. A guy who was pouring sweat and is now dry in the same heat is in trouble.

How much water actually

The usual mistake is drinking a lot at lunch and nothing in between. Your body can't bank it.

  • Roughly one cup every 15–20 minutes while working in heat — around a litre an hour
  • Start hydrated. What you drank yesterday evening matters. Arriving already down is common and hard to recover from during a shift.
  • Electrolytes on long hot days, not just water. Cramping despite drinking plenty usually means salt, not fluid.
  • Watch the coffee-only starts. A guy who has two coffees and no water before 10am is behind before he begins.

Schedule changes that do more than gear

This is where the biggest wins are, and it costs nothing.

  • Start at 6am in summer. Finishing at 2 instead of working until 5 removes the worst three hours of the day entirely. Customers care far less than crews expect.
  • Put the heaviest work first. Big open lawns and anything strenuous before 11. Shaded properties and detail work in the afternoon.
  • Short breaks often, not long breaks rarely. Ten minutes in shade every hour beats forty minutes at noon.
  • Watch the first hot week. Bodies acclimatise over 7–14 days, and the dangerous period is the first stretch of heat after a mild spell — including for experienced guys.
  • New hires get lighter days for two weeks. Not acclimatised, and least likely to speak up.

What to wear

  2. Put a real jug of iced water in every truck, not an afterthought
