UPF 50+, Explained: Why Landscapers Switched to Long Sleeves in July

It's 98 degrees in July and there's a guy on the crew mowing in a long sleeve shirt. Everyone else is in a tee, and everyone else thinks he's lost it.
Ask him about it in September and he won't go back. Ask him in the third week of August and he'll tell you he stopped burning, stopped buying sunscreen, and — the part nobody believes until they try it — he's not hotter than you are.
Here's what's actually going on, and where the marketing around it gets oversold.
The short answer
UPF is a rating for fabric, not for skin. A UPF 50 fabric lets about 1/50th of UV through — roughly 2%. A plain white cotton t-shirt is nowhere near that, and gets dramatically worse when it's wet with sweat.
And a light synthetic long sleeve genuinely runs cooler than a bare arm in direct sun, because most of the heat you're feeling on that arm is radiant load, not air temperature.
UPF is not SPF
People use them interchangeably and they measure different things.

That last row is the whole argument. SPF 50 sunscreen genuinely works — if you apply enough of it and reapply every two hours. On a mowing route, nobody does. Not once. The shirt doesn't require you to remember anything.
The number that surprises people
A dry white cotton t-shirt typically tests somewhere around UPF 5 to 7. Not 50. Five.
Hold one up to a bright sky and you'll see why — you can see light straight through the weave. That's UV going through too.
And when it gets wet with sweat, it gets worse. Water fills the gaps between fibers and reduces the amount of light the fabric scatters, so a soaked cotton tee can drop to around UPF 3. Which is to say: by 10am on a hot day, the shirt you were counting on is barely doing anything.
Three things make a fabric rate well:
- Fiber type. Polyester absorbs UV in a way cotton doesn't — it's a property of the polymer itself, not the weave.
- Tightness of the knit. Fewer gaps, less straight-through transmission.
- Color saturation. Darker, more saturated fabric absorbs more UV than pale fabric. This is the opposite of what most people assume about staying cool.
A dense, dark, fully-printed polyester shirt hits all three at once. That's not a feature someone engineered in — it's what that fabric class does naturally.
Where I'll be straight with you
A UPF number on a label is a tested figure — it comes from lab testing to a standard like AATCC 183 or, in Australia, AS/NZS 4399. We don't stamp a certified number on our shirts, because we haven't paid for that testing on every style.
What's honest to say is what the fabric class does: dense, dark, dyed-through polyester is the same construction that rates 50+ when it is tested, and it's an enormous step up from the cotton tee it's replacing. If you need a certified figure — some employers and some job sites do — buy a garment that carries the tested label.
Why covered runs cooler
This is the part that sounds wrong until you've done it.
On a bare forearm in direct summer sun, most of the heat you feel isn't the 98° air. It's radiant energy landing on your skin. A light-colored, loose, breathable sleeve intercepts a big part of that before it reaches you, and the small air gap between fabric and skin does the rest.
There's a second effect that matters more on a hot route: a wicking fabric spreads sweat out over a large surface so it evaporates instead of dripping. Evaporation is the actual cooling mechanism. Sweat running down a bare arm and dripping into your boot cools nothing.
The catch is that this only works with the right garment. A heavy cotton long sleeve in July is miserable, and it's what most people are picturing when they refuse. That's a fair thing to hate — and it's a completely different shirt.
What the shirt doesn't cover
Sleeves solve forearms, which is where landscapers get the worst of it. They don't solve everything, and the leftover spots are predictable:
- Back of the neck and ears. The single most-missed area on outdoor crews, and the one that matters. A wide-brim or boonie hat covers all three; a ball cap covers none of them.
- The gap between glove and cuff. Two inches of wrist that burns all season. Buy sleeves long enough to overlap the glove.
- Face. Nothing but a brim and sunscreen fixes this one.
One thing worth saying plainly: exposure is cumulative over a career, not per-day. A crew that works outdoors 200 days a year accumulates far more UV than someone who spends two weeks at the beach and worries about it. The point of a sleeve isn't this afternoon. It's twenty years of afternoons.
The cost comparison nobody runs correctly
The usual pitch is "a sun shirt is cheaper than sunscreen." Let's be honest about that.
Applying sunscreen properly to arms and neck means about a quarter-ounce, three times a day. Over a 200-day season that's roughly 150 ounces per man — call it eighteen or nineteen bottles, close to $190 a year, per man.
Except nobody does that. Real crews apply once in the morning, if that, and never again. So the real comparison isn't shirt versus sunscreen. It's shirt versus nothing, which is what most crews are actually running right now.

Five or more items ship free and hit the 12% tier automatically. Two men ordering together hit 16%.
How to get the crew to actually wear them
Buy the long sleeves before the heat arrives, not during it. A guy who first puts on a long sleeve on a 98° afternoon has already decided he hates it. The same guy who's been wearing it since April, through the slow warm-up, never notices the day it got hot.
Order in February or March for the same reason you order anything before the season: mockup is 1–3 business days, production 2–5, shipping 7–12. Ordering the week the heat hits means wearing cotton through the worst of it.
