Coach Shirts: What Coaches Wear and Custom Design Ideas
Share
Saturday, 7:40 a.m. Parents with folding chairs circle the fields looking for whoever holds the lineup card, and every adult on the sideline wears a gray hoodie. Nobody can tell the head coach from a visiting uncle.
Good coach shirts fix that in one glance. Below: what coaches wear at practice and on game day, how to dress a whole staff, what to print on the back, and how to turn an AI sketch into finished shirts.

The short answer
Most coaches wear a polo or a sleeved T-shirt in a color that contrasts with the players, with COACH and a last name across the back. Add a lighter layer for cold mornings, keep the chest logo small, and order the staff set together with the team so everyone matches.
What coaches wear, from practice to playoffs
At practice a coach's shirt has to survive cones, sunscreen and a muddy ball bag. On game day it should tell referees and new parents who is in charge.
| Setting | Style that works | Why coaches pick it |
|---|---|---|
| Weeknight practice | T-shirt or long sleeve | Easy to move in, fine to get dirty, easy to keep a spare in the car |
| Game day on the sideline | Polo | Collar reads as staff, looks sharp in team photos |
| Indoor gym season | Polo or jersey T-shirt | Stays neat under bright lights, pairs with khakis or joggers |
| Early spring or late fall games | Lightweight zip hoodie over a T-shirt | Zip open once the sun comes out |
| Tournaments and banquets | Polo or Hawaiian shirt for the social night | A step up from practice gear without buying a blazer |
Whatever you choose, make it contrast with the roster. If the players wear dark jerseys, a light gray or white coach polo stands out. If the team plays in white, flip it and put the staff in the darkest team color.
Coach shirts for the whole staff
Most rec and club programs have more adults on the bench than they realize: a head coach, one or two assistants, a team manager, a scorekeeper and sometimes a volunteer athletic trainer. Dressed as a set, officials know who speaks for the team and parents know who to ask about carpool.
Three simple ways to separate roles without buying different garments:
- Same shirt, different back text. HEAD COACH, ASST COACH, TEAM MANAGER. Clean and cheap to design.
- Same design, swapped colors. Head coach in the primary color, assistants in the secondary. Works well when the staff is large.
- Same colors, different style. Coaches in polos, manager and scorekeeper in T-shirts. Good when the manager spends the game running between the table and the bench.
If your program also dresses parents, our guide to team mom shirts covers the family side, and custom team shirts walks through ordering for the full roster.
What to print on a coach's shirt
Coach shirts look best a notch quieter than the player jerseys. Borrow one element from the team pattern, such as a sleeve stripe or a faded texture near the hem.
- Back: the word COACH in large block letters with the last name above or below it. "COACH REYES" reads from across a field. First-name versions like "COACH DEE" suit teams of younger players who never learn last names.
- Left chest: a small team logo or initials, roughly the size of a playing card.
- Sleeve: the season year, a founding year or the league division.
- Number: usually skipped. Some staffs use 00 or the year the head coach started as an inside joke.
- Skip: phone numbers, long mottos and anything the league office would not want on camera.
For school or league logos, get written permission from whoever owns the mark. The USPTO's trademark basics page explains how ownership works; treat this as general information, not legal advice.
Cold mornings and the quarter-zip look
Plenty of coaches love a quarter-zip pullover for the polished sideline look. To be straight with you: GearforCrew does not make a quarter-zip. The closest option is our lightweight zip hoodie, which is a full-zip layer, printed edge to edge with the same design as the rest of the staff set.
The sweatshirt and lightweight hoodie also work for cold bleachers. For hot tournament days in open sun, a long sleeve with UPF 50+ is a smart pick.
Sketching the design with AI
You can get a believable staff mockup from ChatGPT or Gemini in a couple of minutes. Describe the garment, the colors, and exactly what goes on the front and back. The walkthrough in how to design a shirt with AI shows each step; these two prompts are a starting point.
Create a flat front and back mockup of a short sleeve polo for the coaching staff of an adult softball team called the CEDAR HOLLOW HORNETS. Colors: light heather gray body with gold and black trim on the collar and sleeve cuffs. Left chest: a small hornet logo placeholder. Back: the word COACH in large black block letters, with the last name ALVAREZ in smaller letters above it. Plain white background, no model.
Show the same coach polo in three versions side by side: HEAD COACH, ASST COACH and TEAM MANAGER on the back. Keep the chest logo, colors and fonts identical so only the role text changes.
Expect the AI to bend a letter or two. Every word is retyped in a clean font before printing, and you approve a mockup first.
Sizes, timing and ordering
Coach shirts are one place where our size range is a perfect fit. Every style comes in adult sizes S–6XL only, which covers coaches, managers and parent volunteers. If you coach young players, their jerseys will need to come from another source, but your staff set can still match the team colors.
When the design and the staff list are ready, order your coach shirts on the custom shirt page. Upload the AI mockup, a photo of last season's shirt or the team logo. Artwork is rebuilt free, and nothing prints until you sign off.
- No minimum. A single head coach shirt is fine.
- Bulk savings add up across the whole order: 5% off 3+ items, 12% off 5+, 16% off 10+ and 20% off 20+. Adding staff shirts to the player order often pushes you into the next tier.

Common questions
What color should coach shirts be?
Pick a color that contrasts with the players so referees and parents can spot staff instantly. A light gray or white shirt works when the team plays in dark jerseys. If the players wear white, dress the coaches in the darkest team color and keep the logo small.
Should coach shirts have a number?
Usually not. Numbers are for officials tracking players, and a numbered coach can cause confusion on a scoresheet. Most staffs use COACH and a last name on the back instead. If you want a playful touch, 00 or the program's founding year is a common choice.
Can each coach have a different name on the back?
Yes. List each staff member's name, role, style and size in one roster. Every shirt is printed individually from that list, and the whole order still counts toward bulk savings, even when one person gets a polo and another gets a zip hoodie.
Do you make coach shirts for women?
Every style is offered in the same adult size run, S–6XL, for anyone on staff. Fit preferences vary, so lay a shirt you already like flat, measure chest width and length, and compare those numbers with the size chart before putting your size on the roster.
Can I put my school's logo on a coach shirt?
Only with permission from the school or district that owns the logo. Ask the athletic office for approved artwork and written OK. Without that, use your own team name and colors, which the printer can turn into a clean design from a sketch or AI mockup.
