Custom Team Shirts: How to Order for Any Team, No Minimum
Share
The group text has 16 people in it. Four of them already grabbed "close enough" orange shirts from a big-box store, and no two of those oranges match. The first game, charity walk or company trivia night is five weeks out.
That is usually the moment someone searches for custom team shirts. This guide walks through picking a style that suits your group, deciding on names and numbers, getting a design out of ChatGPT or Gemini, collecting sizes without chasing anyone, and ordering with no minimum.

The short answer
Custom team shirts go smoothly when you settle three things before designing: the shirt style, whether each person gets a name or number, and a deadline two weeks earlier than you need. Then build a mockup, collect adult sizes in one sheet, and place a single order to unlock bulk savings.
What kind of team are you dressing?
"Team" covers a lot of ground. A Tuesday-night kickball squad, a hospital unit walking for a cause and a bowling league all need matching shirts, but they want very different things printed on them. Start by finding your row.
| Team type | Style that usually fits | What goes on the shirt |
|---|---|---|
| Adult rec league (kickball, softball, hoops) | Jersey T-shirt or tank top | Team name on the front, number on the back, last name optional |
| Company outing or volunteer day | T-shirt or polo | Logo on the chest, event name and year on the back |
| Charity walk or fun run team | T-shirt or long sleeve | Cause, team name and a short motto |
| Trivia, bowling or darts league | Polo or T-shirt | Team name, plus a nickname on each back |
| Coaches and team parents | Polo or lightweight zip hoodie | Small logo on the chest, role such as COACH on the back |
| Fall or winter league | Sweatshirt or lightweight hoodie | Big team name and the season year |

Picking one shirt style for the whole group
Mixed styles look messy in photos, so choose one main style and allow at most one alternative. A common split is jersey tees for players and polos or zip hoodies for the coach and scorekeeper.
GearforCrew prints every style with full all-over sublimation, which means the color and pattern run edge to edge, sleeves and sides included, rather than sitting in a patch on the chest. The options:
- Jersey T-shirt for anything with a scoreboard.
- T-shirt for events, walks and casual leagues.
- Tank top for summer basketball, volleyball and beach events.
- Polo for work teams, golf scrambles and staff.
- Long sleeve for early-morning races and sunny outdoor days.
- Sweatshirt, lightweight hoodie or lightweight zip hoodie for cold sidelines and fan gear.
Names, numbers or neither
Personalization is the difference between a group shirt and a team shirt. Every person in one order can have their own name, number or both, and the order still counts toward bulk pricing as a whole.
A few habits prevent reprints and hurt feelings:
- Pick one name format. All last names, all first names or all nicknames. Mixing "SMITH" with "Big Tony" looks accidental.
- Approve nicknames as a group. What sounds funny at the bar may not suit a company photo.
- Check for duplicate numbers before you submit, and ask your league whether any numbers are off limits.
- Spell-check the roster twice. Printers print what you send.

Designing custom team shirts with AI
You do not need a designer. ChatGPT and Gemini can produce a believable front-and-back mockup in a minute if you give them the team name, two colors and where things go. The full walkthrough lives in how to design a shirt with AI; here are two starting prompts to adapt.
Create a flat front and back mockup of a short sleeve crew-neck team shirt for an adult kickball team called the RIVERBEND ROCKETS. Colors: teal and charcoal with white. Front: team name in a bold arched script across the chest. Back: a large number 00 with space above it for a last name. Thin diagonal speed stripes on both sleeves. Plain light gray background, no model.
Design a polo shirt mockup for a volunteer day team from a fictional title company named HARBOR POINT TITLE. Colors: navy and soft coral. Small logo placeholder on the left chest, "SERVE DAY 2026" in clean capital letters across the upper back, and a faint wave pattern on the lower half. Show front and back side by side on white.
AI tools often misspell letters and invent odd numbers. That is fine for a concept. The printer retypes every word and rebuilds the artwork, then shows you a mockup to approve.
Only use logos and images your team owns or has permission to use. Professional and college team marks, cartoon characters and celebrity photos are off the table. The USPTO's trademark basics page explains why; this is general information, not legal advice.
Collecting sizes and the roster
The slowest part of any team order is waiting on the last three people. Make it one form with four fields: name as printed, number, style and size. Share the size chart in the same message so nobody guesses.
All styles come in adult sizes S–6XL. There are no sizes for young children, so for a family team with small kids, plan something else for them and keep the adults in matching shirts.
Then set a firm cutoff. Work backward from your event: a mockup takes 1–3 business days, production 2–5 business days and standard shipping 7–12 business days. Leave room for one round of edits.
Ordering custom team shirts
Once the roster is locked, send your design and roster through our custom shirt page. Upload an AI mockup, a photo of last season's shirt or a logo file. Artwork is redrawn free, and nothing prints until you approve the mockup.
- No minimum. A late addition can order a single matching shirt later.
- Bulk savings apply automatically: 5% off 3+ items, 12% off 5+, 16% off 10+ and 20% off 20+.
- Free shipping on orders of 5 or more items.
- Tight on time? Contact us for rush shipping in 2–7 days.
Work crews wanting everyday uniforms rather than event shirts can also use the custom work shirt from your photo page.
Common questions
Is there a minimum order for custom team shirts?
No. You can order one shirt or sixty. Larger orders simply save more, since bulk discounts start at three items and climb to 20% at twenty. Many teams order the core roster first, then add shirts for late sign-ups using the same approved design.
Can each shirt have a different name and number?
Yes. Send a roster listing each person's printed name, number, style and size. Every shirt is printed individually from that list within one order, so the whole team still counts toward the bulk discount even though every back is different.
How far ahead should we order team shirts?
Aim for about four weeks before you need them. That covers a mockup in 1–3 business days, a round of edits, production and standard shipping. If the date sneaks up on you, contact us about rush shipping, which covers the delivery portion.
Do you have sizes for children on a family team?
No. Every style comes in adult sizes S–6XL only. Teenagers who already wear adult sizes are usually fine, but young children will need shirts from somewhere else. Many family teams dress the adults in the custom design and keep kids in a matching solid color.
Can we copy the design from an old team shirt?
Yes, if the design belongs to your team. Take a clear, flat photo of the front and back and upload it. The artwork gets redrawn cleanly, colors can be updated, and you approve a mockup before anything is printed.
