Do Sublimation Shirts Fade? What Actually Dulls the Color (and What Doesn't)

It is the question every owner asks before ordering a full set: "Will it still look like this in six months?" Fair question. You have probably watched a crew shirt go from crisp to tired in one summer, and you do not want to pay for that twice.

Sublimation is the printing method behind most all-over printed work shirts, so here is a straight answer on what fades it, what does not, and how to keep a sublimated shirt looking like a uniform for as long as possible.

The short answer

Sublimation shirts do not fade the way printed cotton does, because the dye becomes part of the polyester fiber instead of sitting on top. Washing, sweat and sun barely touch it. What can dull the color is very hot washing or drying and long soaking in strong chlorine. Wash cold and they hold for years.

Why sublimated color holds

Most printed shirts fade in one of two ways. Either the ink layer on top wears, cracks and flakes off, or the dye in the cotton itself bleaches out in sun and laundry. Sublimation avoids both.

During dye-sublimation printing, heat turns the dye into a gas that opens up and bonds with polyester fibers. When the fabric cools, the color is locked inside. There is no separate layer to wash away, and no cotton dye to strip. That is also why a sublimated print feels like nothing: run your hand over it and you feel fabric, not ink. If you want the full comparison with other methods, see sublimation vs screen printing vs DTF.

One thing to know: this only works on polyester. Sublimation on cotton does wash out, often within a few washes, because the dye has nothing to bond with. If a company offers "sublimated" cotton shirts, ask questions.

What can fade a sublimated shirt

What it goes through Effect on sublimated polyester What to do
Regular washing Minimal. Color holds through 150+ washes Wash cold, inside out
Sweat and dirt None on the color Wash after each workday
Sun on the job Holds far better than cotton dye Nothing special needed
Hot dryer, high heat Repeated high heat can dull colors over time Tumble dry low or hang dry
Ironing on the print Can shift the dye Do not iron the print
Bleach and chemical splashes Colorfast through splashes Rinse off at the end of the day
Soaking in strong chlorine Can fade over time, like any fabric Never soak work shirts in bleach

The chemical row matters for pressure washing, soft washing and pest control crews. Our shirts are bleach resistant, meaning colorfast through bleach and chemical splashes. That is very different from bleach-proof. No fabric survives being left in a bucket of straight sodium hypochlorite, and we would rather tell you that now than after the fact. The reasons cotton turns orange are covered in our post on bleach resistant work shirts.

How long do sublimation shirts last?

With normal care, the print usually lasts as long as the shirt does. The fabric wears out before the color does: seams, cuffs and collars take the abuse of daily work. We rate our printed color for 150+ washes without cracking, peeling or fading.

For a crew member who wears the same shirt twice a week, 150 washes is well over a year of hard use, and most crews rotate three shirts per person. Our post on how many work shirts each crew member needs walks through the rotation.

Compare that with a cheap cotton tee on a chemical crew, which can turn blotchy in weeks. The cost per wear is the real price of a uniform.

How to wash sublimation shirts so they last

  1. Turn the shirt inside out before washing to reduce rubbing on the print side.
  2. Wash cold with regular detergent. No bleach in the machine.
  3. Rinse chemical splashes the same day rather than letting them sit overnight.
  4. Tumble dry low or hang dry. Performance polyester dries fast anyway.
  5. Skip fabric softener, which can coat the fibers and reduce sweat wicking.
  6. Do not iron over the print. It rarely needs it.

That is it. No special products. If a shirt does crack, peel or fade, or has any manufacturing defect, within 30 days of delivery, we reprint and reship it free. That is our 30-day wear test, and it is there because we expect the shirts to pass it.

Common questions

Do sublimation shirts fade in the wash?

Not under normal washing. The dye is bonded inside the polyester fibers, so cold machine washing barely affects it. Our shirts hold their color through 150+ washes. Very hot water, high-heat drying and soaking in strong chlorine are what can dull sublimated color over time.

Does sublimation wash out?

On polyester, no. The dye becomes part of the fiber during printing, so there is nothing to wash out. On cotton it does wash out, often within a few washes, because sublimation dye cannot bond with cotton. That is why sublimated work shirts are made from performance polyester.

How long do sublimation shirts last?

Usually as long as the shirt itself. The fabric, seams and cuffs wear out before the print does. We rate our printed color for 150+ washes without cracking, peeling or fading, which is more than a year of hard use for a crew member rotating a few shirts.

Can you put sublimation shirts in the dryer?

Yes, on low heat. Repeated high heat is the main thing that can dull sublimated color, so use a low setting or hang dry. Performance polyester dries quickly either way, which makes it easy to wash a shirt in the evening and wear it the next morning.

Do sublimated shirts fade in the sun?

They hold color far better than dyed cotton. A full summer of outdoor work fades cotton at the shoulders, while sublimated polyester keeps its color. Our shirts also carry built-in UPF 50+ protection, so they protect the person wearing them while they hold their color.
