Work Shirts That Don't Turn Orange: What Pressure Washing Crews Actually Wear

Every pressure washing crew has the same shirt in the truck. Started out navy. Now the shoulders are a blotchy orange-pink, the collar's gone rusty, and there's a splash pattern down one sleeve that looks like someone threw a milkshake at it.
Nobody wears it to a job anymore. It's the shirt you wear when you're loading the trailer.
That shirt cost you about fourteen dollars and lasted about six weeks. Buy five of them a year, three times a year, and you've spent real money looking progressively worse in front of customers. The frustrating part is that most crews conclude uniforms don't work in this trade. They do. The shirt was just made wrong for the job.
The short answer
Cotton turns orange because chlorine strips the dye off the surface of the fiber. The fix isn't a tougher cotton shirt or a "bleach-safe" detergent — it's a different kind of fabric with the color inside the fiber instead of on top of it: dye-sublimated polyester.
Nothing you can buy is truly bleach-proof. But there is an enormous difference between a shirt that goes blotchy in six weeks and one that still looks like a uniform after a full season.
Why navy turns orange and not, say, grey
This is the part that makes it click, and it's worth understanding because it tells you exactly what to buy.
Sodium hypochlorite — the SH in your mix — works by breaking chemical bonds in colored compounds. That's the whole point: it's why it kills algae stains on a roof. It does not know the difference between the black streaks on a customer's shingles and the dye in your shirt.
Dark cotton isn't dyed with one dark pigment. Navy and black are built from layered dyes — typically a blue plus a red plus a yellow component. Chlorine attacks those components at different rates, and the blue almost always goes first. Strip the blue out of navy and what's left underneath is the red and yellow.
That's your orange. It was in the shirt the whole time. Bleach just removed everything sitting on top of it.
It also explains something crews notice but can't explain: the damage doesn't wash out and it doesn't get worse in the laundry. It's not a stain sitting on the fabric. The dye is gone. There is nothing left to clean.
What actually holds up
The fabric that survives this trade works on a completely different principle.
In dye sublimation, the polyester is heated until the fibers open, the dye turns to gas, and the color bonds into the polymer itself. When it cools, the color isn't a coating — it's part of the plastic the fiber is made of. There's no surface layer for chlorine to lift off.

The printed-graphic row matters more than people expect. A screen print is a layer of plastic sitting on fabric. Hit it with chemical, then flex it eight hours a day, then wash it hot — it cracks. Your company name spends the second half of the season looking like it's flaking off, which is arguably worse than having no logo at all. An all-over print has nothing sitting on the surface, so there's nothing to crack.
Where I'll be straight with you
Polyester resists chlorine. It is not immune to it. Full-strength SH left to dry in the fabric, over and over, will eventually dull any garment — and repeated exposure weakens fibers regardless of what they're made of. Anyone selling you a genuinely bleach-proof shirt is selling you something that doesn't exist.
What you're buying is the difference between six weeks and a full season. In this trade, that's the whole ballgame.
Why long sleeves, even in August
Two reasons, and neither is the one people assume.
Spray-back. Surface cleaners and 15° tips throw a fine chemical mist straight back at your forearms all day. You don't feel it happening. You feel it at 9pm when your arms are tight and itchy. A sleeve is the cheapest barrier there is.
Heat, counterintuitively. A light synthetic long sleeve runs cooler in direct sun than bare skin, because it blocks the radiant load and moves sweat off you. Guys who switch don't switch back. It also means you're not reapplying sunscreen to chemical-covered arms every two hours — which nobody actually does anyway.
The crews who insist on short sleeves in July are usually the ones who've only worn heavy cotton long sleeves. That's a fair thing to hate. It's also a different garment.
Three habits that add a season
- Rinse before you drive home. The damage happens while SH sits and dries in the fabric, not in the moment it splashes. Thirty seconds with the hose at the end of the job does more than any detergent.
- Wash cold, hang dry, no fabric softener. Heat sets whatever is left. Softener coats synthetic fiber and kills the wicking that made you buy it.
- Keep one shirt as the mixing shirt. Whoever's handling concentrate wears the shirt that's already ruined. Every crew ends up doing this by accident — do it on purpose and your good shirts last twice as long.
What it actually costs to stop replacing shirts

It comes out roughly even on money in year one — and then stops being even. The real difference isn't the cost. It's that one option has you standing in a customer's driveway in a shirt that visibly failed, and the other doesn't.

What to look for, in ten seconds
- 100% polyester, not a cotton blend. Any cotton in the blend is dye that chlorine can strip.
- All-over / sublimated print, not screen-printed or vinyl. If the graphic feels like a separate layer under your thumb, it will crack.
- Long sleeve for anyone running a wand or a surface cleaner.
- Dark or patterned base. A busy print hides the inevitable working marks far better than a flat solid.
