Custom Shirt With Picture: 9 Design Ideas and How to Order One

Custom Shirt With Picture: 9 Design Ideas and How to Order One

Grandma Rosa turns 80 in October. Her five kids found the 1968 photo of her on a Vespa in a polka-dot scarf, and now they want it on a shirt for everyone at the party. Nobody knows whether a scanned, slightly faded snapshot will work, or where the words should go.

A custom shirt with picture artwork can be the best gift at an event or a blurry disappointment. The difference is mostly layout and planning, and this guide covers both: nine design ideas, four ways to place a photo, how to add text, the permission part, and how ordering works.

The short answer

To make a custom shirt with picture artwork, choose a clear photo, decide whether it fills the whole shirt or sits in one spot, keep any text short, and get permission from the people shown. Send the original file with your wording, then approve a mockup before anything prints.

Custom shirt with picture ideas

Each idea pairs a photo with a layout and a line of text. Mix and match.

Occasion Photo Layout Text idea
Milestone birthday Throwback photo of the guest of honor Large on the back, small on the chest "ROSA 80 · EST. 1946"
Family reunion Old photo of the founding couple Front center with a vintage frame "THE OKAFOR FAMILY · WHERE IT STARTED"
Pet lover Close-up of the dog or cat Repeated all-over pattern of the face None needed
Bachelorette weekend Bride's awkward school photo, with her blessing Front center, bold border "SHE GREW UP"
Retirement party Photo from the first day on the job Back print beside a current photo "THEN · NOW · FINALLY"
Fantasy league champion Winner's photo, with consent Front, trophy illustration around it "ALL HAIL THE COMMISSIONER"
Travel group Wide landscape from the trip All-over, wrapping the whole shirt Small trip name on the sleeve
Small bakery or food truck Photo of the signature item All-over pattern of the item Business name on the chest
Memorial gathering A favorite everyday photo Soft placed print over the heart Name and years, kept simple

For a memorial shirt, choose a photo that feels like the person on a normal good day. Family members often find that a relaxed snapshot means more than a formal portrait.

Four ways to lay out a photo

1. All-over photo

The picture covers the front, back and sleeves. It suits landscapes, textures and wide scenes, and it is where full sublimation shines, because the print reaches the seams. It asks the most from the photo, so it needs a large, sharp original. Faces in an all-over layout can land near a seam, so position matters.

2. Placed photo

The picture sits in one spot, such as the chest or center back, on a solid or patterned shirt. It is the most forgiving layout for older or smaller photos. A border, a rounded frame or a torn-paper edge keeps it from looking like a sticker.

3. Repeated pattern

A cutout of a face or object repeats across the shirt. Pets, a baby photo of the birthday adult, or a signature cupcake work well. The cutout needs a clean edge; upload the photo on our custom shirt page and our designers prepare the cutout when they rebuild the artwork for print.

4. Photo turned into illustration

If the photo is too small, dark or old to print well, an AI tool can turn it into a drawing that keeps the likeness. Something like:

Turn this photo into a bold two-color illustration with thick clean lines, keep the pose and the scooter the same, navy and cherry red on a cream background, no text.

Redraw this pet photo as a cartoon portrait with simple shapes and flat colors, keep the ear shape and markings accurate, plain white background.

Check the result closely. AI can change a face just enough that it no longer looks like the person. For the wider workflow of shaping an AI image into shirt art, read how to design a shirt with AI.

Adding text to a picture shirt

  • Keep text off faces. Place words above, below or beside the photo, never across eyes or mouths.
  • Pick a color from the photo. The scarf red or the sky blue ties the text to the picture.
  • Use one short line. Names, a date or a four-word joke. Longer stories belong in a card.
  • Add a solid band behind busy areas. Text over grass, crowds or water gets lost.
  • Personalize per person. Different names on each shirt in the same order work, which is great for "Grandkid #1, #2, #3".

Faces, permission and photos you did not take

Two rules keep a fun shirt from turning awkward.

Ask the people in the picture. Before printing anyone's face, get their okay, or a parent's okay for any child shown. A quick text works. It matters even more for joke shirts like the bachelorette or league champion ideas.

Use photos you have the right to use. Whoever took a photo usually owns its copyright, even if you are in it. Family snapshots are generally fine among relatives, but professional portraits, event photographer images and pictures of celebrities or famous characters are not. The U.S. Copyright Office FAQ explains the basics. This is general information, not legal advice.

Common questions

Can I put a picture and text on a custom shirt?

Yes. Most picture shirts work best with one short line of text placed above or below the photo, in a color taken from the image. Send the exact wording with your order so it can be typeset, and review the placement in the mockup before approving production.

Can I use an old printed photo?

Often, yes. Scan it or photograph it flat in soft daylight without glare, and send the largest file you have. Faded or small photos may work better as a placed print or turned into an illustration. The mockup shows how it will look before you commit.

Do I need permission to put someone's face on a shirt?

Ask first. It is the respectful thing to do and it avoids trouble, especially for joke shirts or anything shared publicly. For children, ask a parent. Photos taken by a professional photographer may also need the photographer's permission. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can each shirt in an order have a different name?

Yes. The same picture design can carry a different name or number on each shirt within one order, such as each grandchild's name under Grandma's photo. List the names and sizes clearly when you order, and they appear in the mockup for checking.
